What Punxsutawney Phil Can Teach Us About Company Culture

Earlier this month, Punxsutawney Phil – Pennsylvania’s most famous groundhog – predicted six more weeks of winter. While he doesn’t have the best track record historically (only a 40% accuracy rate), the country was hit with some record cold storms with temperatures reaching into negative double and triple digits. So maybe this year, his weather predictions are spot on! (Note: we San Diegans don’t really comprehend what -45-degrees Fahrenheit means!)

An Important Lesson From Groundhog Day

While the tradition and lore surrounding Groundhog Day, made famous by Bill Murray’s 1993 movie, is a bit fun and a lot silly, we think it offers a valuable lesson: don’t get stuck in a boring routine.

None of us want to feel like every day was exactly the same as the last. We thrive on variety and newness. Our brains are wired so we experience more happiness and feel more resilient when there is something novel that focuses us on the present moment. The same is true for your team.

Make It New For Your Team

If you’re reading this blog, chances are you are interested in making sure your employees have opportunities to connect with each other in easy ways. But planning the same happy hour or Zoom social can feel like Groundhog Day if you don’t sprinkle in variety. Giving your team building activities a boost of something new (and we always recommend fun) should be part of your culture building mix.

Just In Time For Spring

This might seem like a daunting call to action, but it doesn’t have to be. We’ve built an entire business around making it as easy as possible for you and as fun as possible for your team to connect through games. You don’t have to be the fun experts because we are!

Now is the perfect time to plan your next spring team building event. We have something for everyone – from your remote and hybrid teams to your in-person San Diego staff and teams visiting our beautiful city for conferences, meetings, and more.

Perfect for Remote Workers

If you have a remote or hybrid team, one of our virtual team building options might be just what’s needed to infuse some energy and help build relationships between your employees. In addition to our Virtual Game Show and Virtual Game Night, our latest offering, Virtual In It To Win It, includes our Tube O’ Fun shipped directly to each participant before the big remote event.

Check out this video our client, Dome Construction, created from our last Virtual In-It-To-Win-It event:

Options In America’s Finest City

If you’re here in San Diego, we love taking advantage of our hometown with several in-person team building activities. Whether you want to be indoors or get outside, we have something guaranteed to get your team grinning from ear to ear!

Come on down for our Game Show, compete against each other in Field Day relay races, enjoy the beach with Sandcastle Wars where you build a sandcastle with your team and try to destroy the enemy’s, and more!

3 Easy Ways To Plan The Fun

We haven’t perfected our bat signal technology, but we’re always an email, web form, or phone call away to help with your team connecting needs. Here’s how to connect:

  1. Send us an email at
  2. Fill out our fancy (not really) web form
  3. Give us a call at 619-972-4746 (we’re old school and would love to TALK to you)

P.S. Read this email again (and again and again) if you want to experience the Groundhog Day effect for yourself!
