How Adapting Makes Team Building Shine

The ancient Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, is credited with the famous phrase, “The only constant is change.” He knew being human meant change was inevitable, and we will all face times when things don’t go according to plan. From our personal lives to our job functions, we will experience change, setbacks, victories, and more.

Expecting the Unexpected

When it comes to our in-person, San Diego team building activities or virtual team building events, we understand changes are part of the game (pun intended). From unpredictable weather and technical difficulties to attendees not following rules or accusing others of cheating (we get it, some people are REALLY competitive!), we’ve learned the second most important characteristic, after being fun, is being adaptable.

We balance executing a plan while knowing there will be detours on our path. Every event is designed down to the most minute detail so we can make changes quickly if required. We have contingency plans and staff trained to roll with whatever comes our way. It’s part of our “Excellence is the Expectation” value and we embody this at every Team Connecting event (our version of team building).

Here are two examples of how this has played out during corporate events we’ve hosted.

Everybody Dance Now

Our in-person Game Show features our versions of four popular TV game shows. During each game, teams collect “cash” to determine the ultimate winner who is eventually celebrated. Every show ends slightly differently, but at one particular event, we had an interesting suggestion thrown at us.

When our host asked the participants, “Do you know how the show ends??” someone yelled, “Dance contest!” Though we had never ended this way, we rolled with it and a dance contest ensued.

Had we been more rigid or afraid to try something new, we wouldn’t have been part of one of the most fun show endings we’ve ever had! We chalk this success up to our ability to be flexible.

When It Rains, We Have Fun Inside

We recently hosted a Team Connecting event originally set for an outdoor space though weather forecasts predicted a chance of rain. We had Leisure Games (cornhole, bocce ball, ladder ball, and bucket ball) ready to go but had a backup plan to host our in-person Game Show inside. Mother Nature had her way and it ended up raining the day of the event. We quickly pivoted to our Plan B without missing a beat.

Our client was extra thankful we pulled off the switch while the attendees had a great time connecting without knowing there had been a major snag in the original program.

Fun + Adaptability For the Win!

The truth is no event has ever gone 100% according to plan because humans are involved. In our world of team building, the times when things have changed the most have been some of our favorite event moments, like the previously mentioned dance contest.

We stay flexible, adaptable, and open-minded because we know this leads to good things. For our business, and many others, the ability to anticipate and embrace changes when they happen, often improves on what was originally mapped out. In some cases, things turn out even better than we hoped.

If your team could use some Team Connecting, regardless of what curve ball might be thrown our way, we are here to help!
